How it Works - (Drop down item number 1)
How a Turbo Works
A turbocharger uses petrol or diesel engines exhaust gases to drive a turbine wheel at speeds up to 200,000 rpm.
The turbine wheel is connected by a shaft to a compressor wheel and the two wheels turn together to suck in and compress large amounts of ambient air. This air is very dense and hot, so it is passed through a charge-air cooler, where it cools and gains even higher density before entering the engine. Compressed air makes the fuel burn more efficiently, thereby delivering more power while consuming less energy. (INSERT HOW IT WORKS PIC THAT IS IN DROPBOX)
In modern vehicles turbochargers are coupled with high pressure fuel injection systems, a combination that makes for even more efficient and cleaner combustion.
Turbos make engines:
• More Efficient – turbocharged petrol engines deliver up to 20 percent better fuel economy over a non-turbocharged equivalent. A turbo diesel engine of the same power rating delivers up to 40 percent better fuel efficiency compared to a non-boosted diesel engine.
• Better Performing – turbocharged engines create more power and torque, making vehicles more responsive and safer to drive. Turbos also prevent the loss of power at high altitude, providing significant operational benefits to turbocharged trucks and off-road machinery.
Installation (drop down item number 2)
In our workshops we install turbochargers on all makes and models of cars and vans in accordance with manufacturers’ specifications.
Turbochargers supplied and fitted in TurboChargers.ie workshops come with 12 months warranty for parts, assembly and installation.
For turbochargers sold by us and fitted outside of our premises by third party, standard 12 months warranty for turbochargers' parts and assembly applied. Please contact your mechanic to confirm the warranty on turbo installation.
Your warranty is only valid if the turbocharger is fitted in line with the instructions below. TurboChargers.ie reserves the right to reject a warranty claim if the turbocharger is starved of oil or lubricated with contaminated oil at any time or fitted wrong or without finding a problem leading to its collapse.
Before Fitting the Turbocharger
Make sure that any fault that caused your vehicle’s turbocharger to fail has been fixed.
To prevent oil starvation of the replacement turbo, the oil feed pipe must be replaced, irrespective of condition.
You must replace following items with new parts: Engine Oil, Oil Filter, Air Filter, Gaskets and Washers.
Inspect, remove, clean and replace if necessary following items:
Engine Sump (inside)
Oil Pump and Strainer
DPF and Catalytic Convertor
EGR Valve
Crankcase Breather Hoses and Filters
Turbo Oil Drain Pipe
Intercooler and Air Hoses
Diesel injectors
Mass Air Flow meter and other electronic components
Fitting Instructions
Immobilize the engine
Fill turbo inlet with engine oil
Before fitting the turbo, crank the engine until at least 100 ml of oil is pumped out of the turbo oil feed pipe
DO NOT use exhaust paste or any other sealing compounds on any part of the turbo
Connect oil feed and drain pipes
After fitting the turbo, crank the engine for 20 sec to build an oil pressure
Start the engine and check for oil, air and exhaust gases leaks
Check the oil pressure is within the manufacturer’s specified limits.
FAQ -
Q: Why is better to fit fully rebuild turbo instead of used turbocharger from dismantlers yards?
A: Even sometimes used parts are cheaper, in the case of used turbocharger it is nearly impossible to say if it is ok or not without full dismantling and machine testing, so there is high level of risk that the complete job will turn bad. Based on our extensive experience, our recommendation is to use original new or fully rebuild/reconditioned turbochargers.
Q: Will turbocharger replacement fix the problem?
A: Our answer is ‘not always, it might solve a part of it’. We couldn’t perform any additional testing until damaged/faulty turbocharger is replaced. In reality, 90% of turbo related problems going to be resolved upon fitting a new turbo, but having an experience of multi-layer faults has made us very wary of trying to predict the future!
Q: There is blue/black smoke, is my turbo going bad?
A: Blue/black smoke can be caused by numerous conditions, and one of them could be a worn turbocharger. The following are potential reasons that blue/black smoke could occur:
Clogged air filter element or obstructed air intake duct. This condition creates a vacuum due to high differential pressure resulting in oil drawn into the compressor and subsequently burned during engine combustion.
Engine component problems; i.e. worn piston rings or liners, valve seals, fuel pump, fuel injectors, etc.
Obstructed oil drain on turbocharger resulting in pressure building inside the center housing and forcing oil past the turbocharger seals.
Damaged turbocharger or worn turbocharger past its useful service life.
Black smoke is also sometimes indicative of too rich an air/fuel mixture.
Q. What additional maintenance is required for the turbo?
A. Good, clean oil is extremely important to the turbocharger. It is best to change the oil and filter at least as often as the automobile manufacturer recommends. Turbo performance is sensitive to turbo inlet conditions. A clogged air filter can drastically affect the turbo inlet. In turbocharged used vehicles oil and filters should be replaced at 8000 to 11000 KM (5000-7000 Miles) intervals.
If the oil service was overdue, the best action is, as soon as possible carry out an oil and filter change, and again repeat the oil and filter change within the first 500 Km or half a Mile. For very contaminated engines this process may need to be repeated more than once.
In our workshops we supply and fit O.E. (original equipment) oils and filters for every make and model at affordable prices.
Never exceed the vehicle manufacturer's recommended service intervals.
